5 tips to give volume to fine hair

While most of us wish for a thick head of hair, for many of us it’s simply not in the cards—that is, without the help of a whole lot of extensions. But, before you feel like you have to settle for lifeless, fine-looking hair, read this. Below we’re sharing five tips to help to boost volume and breathe new life into fine hair!

1. Use Volumizing Shampoo & Conditioner

If you have fine-looking hair the first step in amping up the volume is washing and conditioning your hair with the right products. While super-hydrating products are great for coarser strands, when your hair is fine, it can be weighed down by such formulas. Instead, look for a volumizing shampoo and conditioner like Garnier Fructis Full & Plush. These types of products have been formulated for fine, flat-looking hair in order to help make your strands look visibly fuller. When conditioning fine hair, only use the product on the mid-shafts and ends of the hair, which helps to not weigh down your hair.

2. Reach for Mousse

One hairstyling product every gal with fine hair needs is mousse. Mousse—like Garnier Fructis Root Amp Root Lifting Spray Mousse—helps to lift the hair at the root, without leaving a sticky-feeling residue behind. These light, airy foams help to build long-lasting body and work well before a blow-out and when air-drying.

3. Boost with a Blow-Out

Blow-drying is a fast way to give hair the appearance of having extra volume—that is… when you know how to blow-dry the right way. First, reach for a blow dry bodifying treatment that also acts as a heat protectant like Garnier Fructis Full & Plush Voluptuous Blow Out. Use your blow-dryer’s low heat and low speed settings and rough dry the hair until it’s only just slightly damp. Once it’s about 80 percent dry, use a natural-bristle round brush to lift the hair up at the roots in small sections, starting at the nape of the neck and working your way up to the crown. For added volume, set your hair in large Velcro rollers around the crown. Once your hair is cool, take out the rollers and enjoy all that va-va-volume!

4. Don’t Over Do it

Since fine hair can easily fall limp and look lifeless, it’s important to keep product use to a minimum. Pick one volumizing hairstyle product and stick with it! It’s also key to keep your hair clean. While ladies with thick, coarse hair can often go a few days—or even a week—between shampoo sessions, when you have fine hair you’ll want to make sure you’re washing it at least every other day. Between natural oils, dirt, and product buildup, fine hair can start to look flat and dull. Another trick is to try not to over-brush your hair as brushing distributes the oils from the scalp down the strand which—you guessed it—can cause the hair to fall flat.

5. Try a Trim

While long mermaid-like locks may be what you want, when you have fine hair, longer lengths aren’t always as flattering as their shorter counterparts. Ask your stylist for a blunt-cut lob which can help to make your hair’s hemline appear more full. Give the trendy style even more life by spritzing a texturizing spray throughout the mid-lengths (avoiding the roots) or by wrapping 1-inch sections around a curling wand, alternating between curling the hair away from and toward the face.

It’s important to note that fine hair and thinning hair are not one in the same. If you think that your hair is losing volume compared to before you can make an appointment to see a dermatologist who may be able to help you find alternative solutions.
