How to Bleach Hair at Home: Step by Step
01
Test for Allergies
You should do an allergy alert test 48 hours before each use of the product, even if you have used hair bleaching and/or coloring products before.
02
Prepare to Bleach
Your hair should be dry and unwashed. To prevent the bleach from irritating your skin, rub a little body lotion around your hairline. Remove any jewelry, wrap a towel around your shoulders, and put on the gloves.
03
Mix the Hair Bleaching Kit
• Open the Crème Developer bottle (A).
• Shake the Bleach (B) well and pour it into the Developer bottle (A).
• Open and pour the Lightening Creme (C) into the Developer bottle (A).
• Shake up the mixture with the top facing away from you.
• Remove the flat cap and screw on the pointed applicator.
04
Section Your Hair and Apply Bleach
Gently brush out any knots, and divide hair into 4–6 sections using clips. Begin 1 inch below the roots and evenly distribute the mixture through mid-lengths and ends.
05
Leave Bleach on for 20-30 Minutes
Leave the mixture on for 20-30 minutes (depending on desired lightening results). If you also want to lighten your roots, saturate them with the remaining mixture for an additional 20 minutes.
06
Rinse the Bleach Out
Rinse your hair until the water runs completely clear.
07
Apply Color Conditioner
Apply the color conditioner (D), which is infused with a nourishing blend of avocado, olive and shea oils to leave hair feeling soft and smooth. Leave on for two minutes, then rinse thoroughly. Towel-dry and style your hair.

How to Touch Up Roots

Just need a root touch-up? Start by parting your hair with the applicator tip. Only apply the mixture to new growth, being careful not to overlap with previously lightened hair. Repeat until all the roots are saturated. Leave on for 30-60 min, depending on your lightening preview test.

BLEACHING HAIR AT HOME FAQS

Can You Bleach Wet Hair?

You can bleach wet hair, but the water that your hair has already absorbed will dilute the dye. Consequently, the bleach will be less effective.

Should I Wash My Hair Before Bleaching It?

It's best if your hair is slightly dirty before bleaching. The natural oils produced by your scalp protect it from irritation and shield your hair, reducing damage during the bleaching process. Keeping that oil barrier means stronger, healthier hair while you go blonde.

Can You Perm Bleached Hair?

While you technically can perm bleached hair, the reverse order is preferred. If your hair is already bleached, it’s best to use a perming formula to avoid breakage.

How Often Can You Bleach Your Hair?

A safe bet is to bleach your hair every six to eight weeks. If you really need touchups sooner, wait at least three weeks after the last treatment.

What Tools Are Needed To Bleach Hair?

To bleach your hair safely and effectively, you’ll need the following tools:
- Bleach powder and developer (10–40 volume, depending on your hair and desired lift)
- Applicator brush and mixing bowl
- Sectioning clips to divide hair
- Gloves and protective cape
- Plastic cap
- Toner and purple shampoo

How Do You Care for Bleached Hair?

To care for bleached hair, opt for sulfate-free, moisturizing shampoos and conditioners to maintain hydration and prevent dryness. Incorporate weekly deep conditioning masks to restore your hair’s elasticity and smoothness. Also, try to limit heat styling, and whenever you do use heat tools, always apply a heat protectant to minimize further damage.

How Do You Bleach Hair Without It Turning Orange?

To avoid orange tones when bleaching hair at home, use the right developer strength and opt for a lower volume to lift your hair gradually and evenly. After bleaching, apply a toner with blue or purple undertones to effectively neutralize any warm orange or yellow hues, leaving your blonde looking cool and balanced.

What Is the Least Damaging Way to Lighten Your Hair?

Garnier’s Charcoal Bleach is the best choice to gently lift hair to bright, cool tones while protecting strength and moisture. Its blend of purifying charcoal and 5 fruit oils nourishes strands and helps prevent the damage typical of traditional bleach kits.
