About This Shade
Garnier Nutrisse shade 40 Dark Brown (Dark Chocolate) is a neutral dark chocolate brown hair color—pure, natural brown with no added red or ash reflects. It sits one shade lighter than Nutrisse 30 Darkest Brown and provides 100% gray coverage for a rich, chocolate brown result.

Is This Shade Right For Me?
Shade 40 is ideal if your natural hair ranges from light brown to black and you want a natural-looking dark brown hair dye result. If you prefer a lighter color that still reflects naturally, try 50 Medium Natural Brown (Truffle) — for a softer, lighter brown. If you would like to remain in the dark brown range but would like to try other reflects and tones there are many shades to choose from including 413 Bronze Brown (Bronze Sugar) (warm caramel hair color vibes), 415 Soft Mahogany Brown (Raspberry Truffle) (auburn/reddish brown hair color), and 434 Deep Chestnut Brown (Chocolate Chestnut) (classic chestnut brown hair).

For anyone who currently has color treated hair, there are special considerations for the color result you can achieve. Because of this, we do not recommend shade 40 (Dark Chocolate) for hair that has been previously colored 30 Darkest Brown (Sweet Cola) or darker. Color results depend on your starting shade and condition; hair darker than dark brown may see minimal lightening. For personalized guidance, use our Shade Selector Tool. FAQ

Is Nutrisse Shade 40 suitable for covering gray hair?

Yes, this shade provides 100% gray coverage. The formula uses ColorBoost technology to efficiently infuse intense dyes into the hair fiber, resulting in richer, radiant, and long-lasting color.

How does Shade 40 Dark Brown differ from Shade 30?

Shade 40 Dark Brown is a natural dark brown and one shade lighter than 30 Darkest Brown (Sweet Cola).

Can I use this shade if I have previously colored hair?

It depends on your current color. If your hair has been previously colored with shade 30 Darkest Brown (Sweet Cola) or darker, we do not recommend using shade 40 Dark Brown (Dark Chocolate). It is best suited for natural hair between light brown and black. Hair color cannot predictably lighten previously colored hair.

What nourishing ingredients are included in this hair color kit?

This kit features a fruit oil ampoule that you pour directly into the color mixture. Additionally, the silicone-free after-color conditioner is infused with five responsibly-sourced oils: avocado, olive, coconut, argan, and shea.

Are there other dark brown options with different tones?

Yes, if you wish to remain in the dark brown range but want different reflects, there are several options. You might consider shade 413 Bronze Brown (Bronze Sugar), 415 Soft Mahogany Dark Brown (Raspberry Truffle), or 434 Deep Chestnut Brown (Chocolate Chestnut).

Color ended up lighter not darker

I used the chestnut brown on my light brown hair today. Instead of going darker like I expected, it went lighter. Was disappointed to have my hair look lighter not darker. Is there a way to fix it?

Itching is out of control! Dont buy!

Horrible experience. Ive used Garnier in the past but this time mademy scalp itch nonstop. Its now day 3 and cant stop scratching my scalp. Never had this happen with any other brand. So uncomfortable. Will have to go to doctor. Never again. They mustve changed their formula. Also, while color is changing you get scared its not gonna turn out right because it turns green. Color was blah! John Frieda mousse hair dye is amazing! Skip this one! Soo many better brands! out there!

No, I do not recommend this product.

Hi Evilheffer, We apologize you were not satisfied with the results you achieved with Nutrisse Darkest Brown. We know how disappointing it can be to look forward to a new application of color only to find that your results are not what you expected. There are many reasons why haircolor results can come out too dark. Once you have color-treated hair, we suggest following the touch up application method to achieve optimal results. Otherwise, by doing repeat full head applications, due to the hair's porosity, you are left with a haircolor result that is much darker than what you intended. If you have any additional questions or would like to speak with one of our haircolor experts directly, please reach back out!

  • A: Hello, Thanks for reaching out! Yes, you can apply #61 light ash brown over honey brown hair. The ash (cool) tones will help neutralize the warm, brassy, or yellow/orange undertones of your current honey brown hair, resulting in a cooler shade. Thanks for your interest in Garnier!

Yes, a light ash brown hair color can neutralize unwanted red tones in color-treated hair, however if the red shade was darker it may not reduce enough of the red. Q: Why did you change the #50? I hate red! Natural brown should not have any red in it. Red is next to impossible yo get rid of. It will take forever to grow this shade out. Not soft and silky anymore either. When a color is perfect, what screw it up?
