How to improve the appearance of sun damage on your skin
There are a lot of things to love about the sun — good weather, nice temperatures and the opportunity to spend time outside, however the sun’s UV rays can pose a great risk to our skin. Sun exposure can cause our skin to age more rapidly, can cause painful damage in the form of sunburns and can leave behind signs of damage such as hyper-pigmentation on our complexion. If your skin has been affected by too much sun exposure there are a few things you can do to make it look and feel better. Read our advice about how you can help your skin manage sun-related issues such as sunburn, dehydration and dark spots.
1. Dehydration
Dehydrated skin can occur for a variety of reasons such as sun exposure and being in a hot climate. When your skin is dehydrated it is lacking moisture and can appear parched. It’s different from dry skin, which generally produces too little oil. Dehydrated skin can affect all skin types and is a skin concern in which your skin has too little moisture. A great way to help dehydration caused by the sun is by using deeply hydrating products both during the day and at night. Garnier SkinActive’s Moisture Rescue Actively Hydrating Daily Lotion Fragrance Free SPF 15 is a hydrating, non-comedogenic moisturizer infused with natural humectant glycerin. It deeply hydrates your skin and helps strengthen skin's barrier to protect against moisture loss. It also protects your skin from the sun making it ideal to wear during the day. At night pamper and hydrate your skin with a sleeping cream or overnight mask. Garnier SkinActive’s Miracle Anti-Fatigue Sleeping Cream packs the nourishing qualities of a mask with the hydrating qualities of a moisturizer. Formulated with antioxidant lavender essential oil, hyaluronic and hydroxy acids, it’s a hydrating powerhouse. In the morning you can wake up with hydrated, glowing skin.
2. Sunburn
Sunburns are painful and uncomfortable, and worst of all they can damage your skin. The first thing you should do to alleviate your sunburn is get out of the sun. According to the American Association of Dermatology you should take a cool bath or shower, then use an aloe or soy-based moisturizer to restore hydration and soothe skin. Try your best to protect the affected area by keeping it covered until the sunburn subsides. Make sure that the next time you go outside you apply enough broad spectrum SPF avoid a repeat sunburn and remember to reapply every two hours. Prevention is the best way to protect your skin from sun damage.
3. Dark Spots
Dark spots can occur when your skin produces excess melanin in response to sun exposure. Once dark spots appear it takes patience to fade their appearance but with the help of antioxidants, such as Vitamin C, you can help them become less visible. If you have multiple areas with dark spots and your skin is dull overall try using an overnight peel such as Garnier SkinActive’s Clearly Brighter Dark Spot Overnight Peel. This overnight peel helps refine skin texture, smooth skin tone and reduces the look of dark spots. Its formula contains glycolic alpha hydroxyl acid (AHA) and Vitamin C. If you want to remove individual dark spots a dark spot corrector will help brighten and even out your complexion. Garnier SkinActive’s Clearly Brighter Dark Spot Corrector formula contains lipo-hydroxyl acid (LHA), pine bark essence and Vitamin C to reduce the look of dark spots and make your skin appear radiant. Daily usage will lessen the appearance and reveal luminous skin.
