What Are Ceramides?
Ceramides are a class of fatty acids called lipids that are naturally found in the hair cuticle, (the outermost layer of the hair). The cuticle consists of overlapping dead cells — think downward-facing roof tiles or fish scales – that protect the hair shaft. Ceramides help keep these “scales” closed, and locked in position.
However, harsh chemical treatments, excessive styling, heat damage, and even cold weather can cause the cuticles to open, allowing precious moisture and nutrients to escape. The result? Hair that is dull, brittle, and more prone to damage. So if you’ve ever wondered if ceramides are good for hair, the answer is a resounding yes!
