With thousands of products at your fingertips, it can be overwhelming to know how you should be taking care of your skin. In this article, we outline some of the most effective skin care routines, customized by age. Read on to find out how you can have healthy looking skin at any age.
Effective Skin Care By Age
1. In Your 20s
This decade is the perfect time to develop good skin care habits that will lay the foundation for great skin in years to come. Remember to always remove your makeup no matter how late you get in. Lay off the junk food and eat foods rich in antioxidants like fruits and vegetables. Try to cleanse your skin thoroughly, then apply a moisturizer that’s compatible with your skin type. Make sure you clock in the proper hours of shut-eye so that your skin can restore itself at night. And remember to apply broad spectrum SPF to your skin each and every day.
2. In Your 30s
At around 25, skin turnover starts to slow down so by age 30, there’s a chance that your skin is starting to look slightly duller. Regular exfoliation is a good way to make sure dead skin cells on skin’s surface are being sloughed away. Apply a gentle exfoliator once a week followed by a hydrating mask and moisturizer. If you’ve been sparse with your use of SPF in the past, dark spots and sun damage may start to appear in your 30s. Consider using a corrector and incorporate retinoids or pro-retinol into your nightly skin care routine. Retinoids have exfoliating and skin brightening qualities which can help your complexion look more radiant and even-toned. Retinoids make your skin extra sensitive to sun exposure, so if the prior sun damage didn’t inspire you to apply SPF, you should do so now. This decade is also a good time to start taking good care of the skin around your eyes. The skin in this region is very thin and is usually the first place where wrinkles start to form. Use an eye cream or gel formulated with retinol in this delicate area to ensure your eyes always look pert.
3. In Your 40s
Where you previously saw fine lines only with the movement of your skin (i.e. smiling), in your 40s, these lines will likely become more permanent. You may also see more age and sunspots. Now is a good time to start cleansing with a creamy cleanser mornings and evenings and yes, SPF is still incredibly important; make sure to apply it every day as directed. Up the ante of your nighttime skincare routine by increasing the concentration of retinoid you use. If they aren’t already part of your skin care routine, start adding peptides to your regimen. You can find many serums formulated with both retinoids and peptides to help skin look smooth and radiant. Apply to clean skin and then add a moisturizer with SPF to lock the serum in and strengthen your skin’s protective barrier. Remember to continue using an eye cream or gel to protect the fragile skin in this area!
4. In Your 50s And Beyond
Moisture is key at this age. It will help your skin’s overall appearance and improve dryness, which is likely your number one complaint when it comes to your skin’s overall appearance. Also, start paying attention to what’s going on beyond your face. Your jawline, neck, chest, and hands will all need love and care. Make sure to cleanse and moisturize these areas as they too will succumb to dryness.
By simply developing an effective skin care routine you’re already ahead of the curve and on your way to beautiful skin at every age.
