What is Argan Oil and Why Should You Use it?
Argan oil is considered to be a miracle oil with multiple skin and hair functions. If you aren’t familiar, we’re putting this natural ingredient on the map for you. Argan oil is derived from the Moroccan argan tree and is composed of many skin-beneficial ingredients and antioxidants such as Vitamin E, ferulic acid and fatty acids. So what can this “liquid gold” do for you? Find out more below.
Where does it come from?
Argan trees only grow in the southwestern region of Morocco. They grow argan nuts and their oil is extracted by removing the kernels from the shells, then hand-grinding them. The process is long and it can take several days to get a liter of argan oil.
How does it work?
Argan oil can work wonders on pretty much any part of your body. It’s multi-functionality is what makes it so appealing. Argan oil can help soften, moisturize and protect your skin and hair. It’s full of vitamins, minerals, and fatty acids that give luster, shine and hydration to whatever area you apply it to.
6 Ways to Use Argan Oil
1. Pre-Shampoo Conditioner
If your hair is dry, frizzy or damaged a great way to ready it for shampoo is to apply argan oil before. This softens and protects your hair for the next step and sets it up to look healthy and hydrated when you are done washing your hair. An hour or 30 minutes before you step into the shower apply argan oil to your scalp and hair. Massage your scalp in a circular motion stimulating your hair follicles. You can gently comb or brush your hair to distribute evenly across your hair. Let it rest, the go about your shampoo and conditioner routine as always.
2. Face Oil
Argan oil has great hydrating and restorative qualities. After cleansing your face in the evening, apply a few drops of pure argan oil into your skin and gently massage in. Unlike other oils argan oil absorbs well and dries completely after being applied to skin. Depending on your skin’s needs you can follow this with another step such as moisturizer to lock in the skin-benefitting effects and wake up with plump, glowing skin.
3. DIY Scrubs
Argan oil is a great base for scrubs and you can create your own with just a few essentials from your pantry. Are you looking to slough off some oil winter skin and reveal a new glowing body? Use argan oil as your starting point and place into a bowl. Then mix with some brown sugar and a few drops of lemon. Apply over your body and try to massage into your skin so that you are loosening dead skin cells. Then wash off in the shower. This same mask also works on your face. If you want to smooth rough lips you can also use this formula and also mix in honey to soften and protect your lips. Just try to not eat this scrub, hard as it might be!
4. Styling Cream
Argan oil is the perfect way to tame flyaways and frizz. You can use argan oil before you blowdry your hair to minimize damage and to make it look smoother. Just apply a few drops and run through your wet hair before. Argan oil can also tame hair when it’s dry. Apply a few drops and smooth over hair to make it appear more uniform and shiny.
5. To Soften Tough Spots
Are there some hardened spots on your body such as your heels, cuticles or hands where the skin is tough to manage? Argan oil can help soften these areas. A good way to get baby soft feet is to apply a generous amount of argan oil to feet and then put on socks. The argan oil will help soften your skin overnight. You can do the same for your hands and if you really want to take things to the next level place them in a light pair of gloves or soft socks. Your skin will be like new.
Once you step out of the shower use argan oil while your skin is still damp to moisturize. The argan oil will leave your skin feeling hydrates, nourishes and will give it a light sheen that will make your skin look impeccable all day.
