How to cocktail hair products for curly hair

Because each curl type is so unique, it can be hard to get everything you want from a single hair product. Luckily, you don’t have to wait any longer to get your dream hairstyle. When you mix different hair products together, you can customize your perfect curly hair look every time. This DIY trick in the curl community known as “cocktailing,” and it’s easier than it sounds. Use the following hair recipes to breathe new life into the curly hair products you might already have under your bathroom sink to get started.

Moisturizing Curl Definer

Love the hold of a hair gel but need extra moisture? Mix equal parts curl cream, like Garnier Fructis Curl Stretch Loosening Pudding, and styling gel, such as Garnier Fructis Curl Shaping Spray Gel, in your palms, and then rake it through damp curls. This is ideal if you have fine hair and your curls are super-soft, since this curl texture isn’t usually well-defined and needs to be shaped.

Second Day Hair Refresher

Curls often need a boost in between washings—since, by day two or three, they may start to feel dry or heavy. Give curly hair new life sans shower with a combo of distilled water and one or two tablespoons of a leave-in conditioner (try Garnier Fructis Triple Nutrition Curl Nourish Butter Cream Leave-In). Shake the hair formula up in an empty spray bottle and then mist over your curls.

Deep Conditioning Treatment

Don’t have the cash—or time—for a pricey hair conditioning treatment in the salon? Make your own homemade hair treatment. Mix a conditioner like Garnier Fructis Triple Nutrition Curl Nourish Conditioner with a few tablespoons of olive oil (or another fruit oil, like avocado oil or shea oil) and generously slather your curls with it. Cover your hair with a shower cap for 15 to 30 minutes to keep your neck dry and to seal in hair moisture, then rinse.
