Which haircut is best for my face shape?

Just about everyone knows what it's like to secretly covet a haircut but be a little nervous to actually get it. When you know how to suit a particular cut to your face shape, however, you can work with your stylist to nail the look and get a result that makes you feel and look amazing every day. Here are the four main face shapes:

• Oval: Shaped like an oval, with high cheekbones and a chin that's narrower than your forehead

Best Haircut Options

Ovals

Banged Bob: Bangs and a soft, layered bob will frame your face and accentuate all of its best features. Ask your stylist for eyebrow-length bangs and short layers to help downplay the length of your face.

Asymmetrical Pixie: A pixie cut can highlight your gorgeous cheekbones and create visual interest with layers and texture. Ask for a deep side part, long, angled bangs and lots of soft layers for volume.

Rounds

Wavy Layers: If you have long hair, pump up the volume by asking your stylist to create layers at your natural jawline, which can lengthen your face and accentuate great cheekbones. To enhance the look, get highlights at the ends of your hair or go with an ombré style.

Short and Spiky: An ultra-short, edgy cut is an easy way to add height to your face and draw attention to your eyes. Ask for choppy, layered ends you can tease with pomade all around your crown.

Squares

Angled Bob: This svelte cut is longer in front, with layers that gradually taper to their shortest right at the nape of the neck. Ask for the longest layers to start an inch or two below your chin and the shortest, in back, to line up with your jaw.

Mod Pixie: A vintage cut that reached the height of its popularity in the '50s, the mod pixie features blunt layers, a deep side part and long, asymmetrical bangs that can add the illusion of length to your face.

The Lob: The "lob," or long bob, is a shoulder-length cut without layers. Because it's longer and all one length, it softens the jawline and draws attention to pretty, angled shoulders and collarbones.

Long, Angled Pixie: Much like the angled bob (only shorter), the angled pixie is longer in front – with layers about chin-length – and shorter in back. This cut highlights the best features of a heart-shaped face, and the side part it uses adds visual interest to the style.
