The best way to make your skin make up ready by skin type

If you want your make up to look its best all day, you need to prime your skin correctly first! After a night’s worth of sleep, your face will need a refresher. We’ll outline how you can have freshly made up skin all day long.

Step 1 Cleanse

Even if you took off your entire face of make up last night and cleansed thoroughly, after a night of sleep your skin is no longer “clean.” Your skin will have oil residue and sweat, which means you should cleanse again come morning. If you have oily or combination skin, we recommend you use a gentle but effective cleanser, ideally something with glycolic acid which can help regulate oil production. If you have dry or sensitive skin, use a gentle cleansing lotion or cleansing milk that won’t dry out your skin or interfere with your delicate skin barrier. All skin types can benefit from a cleanser with antioxidants that will set your skin up to fight against pollution and other environmental factors for the day.

Step 2 Exfoliate

If you think of exfoliation as a nighttime-only ritual then think again. Yes it can be a little time-consuming in the morning, but if you wake up notice your skin looks dry or flaky, it’s probably good to take off the surface layer of skin before you apply makeup. Use a gentle exfoliator with fruit or lactic acid and/or gentle exfoliating particles. Avoid any harsh scrubs with sand or crystal particles that can hurt your skin.

Step 3 Moisturizer

This next step is important, particularly if you live in a city where the environment and exposure to pollution can wreak havoc on your skin. Use a moisturizer with an antioxidant complex to protect your skin— antioxidants help neutralize free radicals which can oxidize skin. Avoid damage to your skin by using a moisturizer infused with antioxidants like Garnier SkinActive's Clearly Brighter Brightening & Smoothing Daily Moisturizer with SPF15.

Step 4 BB Cream

If your skin is oily you may want to use a mattifying product that helps regulate shine. A BB cream can create a helpful first layer and Garnier SkinActive’s 5-in-1 Skin Perfector Oil-Free BB Cream is specifically designed for oily and combination skin. It will control shine, brighten, even out and protect your skin with SPF 15. Apply as a base then add on concealer or foundation as needed.

For dry, normal and sensitive skin, make sure you are applying a moisturizer that hydrates and soothes your skin. Garnier SkinActive’s Moisture Rescue Cream provides a great base for hydration.

Step 5 SPF

If your make up doesn’t have SPF in it, you will need to apply it to your skin before proceeding with the rest of your routine. No matter what the weather, the sun harmful UV rays can damage your skin and you should be wearing at least SPF 15. Depending on your skin you can use an oil-free lotion or something that will give hydration and/or add ceramides for drier skin types.

With these five steps your skin should be primed for wearing makeup. The right preparation will have your skin looking its best.
