8 Ways to Achieve Better Skin
Even if you take good care of your skin, you might be making skin care mistakes without even realizing. We’re singling out some things you might be doing that could be inadvertently harming your skin. Here are 8 skin care commandments to help your skin look its best.
1. Avoid Squeezing Your Pimples
Unfortunately there seems to be a misconception that sometimes it’s okay to pop pimples. We’re here to tell you that those circumstances never exist. Every time you squeeze or pick at your skin, you cause harm to the skin’s surface. The side effects last far longer than any pimple, so if you see a blemish, just let it be. If you’ve already squeezed, calm the area with a disinfecting lotion to prevent bacteria from infecting the area. The best way to avoid a pimple is by using the right products to cleanse and moisturize your skin properly every day. This will keep blackheads, whiteheads, pimples and acne at bay.
2. You Apply Too Little SPF
Not applying enough SPF is only slightly better than not applying SPF at all. You always need SPF no matter what the weather, and you should be applying a good amount of it - nearly the size of a quarter - just for just your face. Use at least broad spectrum SPF 15 and if you’re spending time in the pool or playing sport, re-apply often.
Being abrasive to the skin can be damaging in the long run, and you may have even associated exfoliation with that same notion. While there are indeed harsh exfoliators in the market today, exfoliating can do more good for your skin than harm – it removes old surface skin cells, which can often be the cause of blemishes or your skin looking dull. Avoid exfoliators that include crystals or sand and instead use a gentle exfoliating wash once a week that contains fruit or lactic acid that will revive your skin but won’t cause any imbalance.
4. Wash Make Up Brushes
We agree it can be easy to forget to do this given your busy lifestyle. Unfortunately make up brushes, applicators and sponges can harbor dirt, sweat and bacteria which can cause you to break out. It’s important to wash these weekly so that you won’t transfer bacteria to your skin resulting in breakouts.
5. Moisturize Properly
There are two big mistakes that can be made when it comes to moisturizing. First, if you have oily or combination skin, you still need to moisturize. Second, dry skin types should not assume that the richest cream is automatically the best for your skin. Keep an eye out for active ingredients such as ceramides which can help replenish your skin.
6. Remove Your Make up Before You Exercise
We’re all about getting exercise. If you wear makeup when you exercise however this can be detrimental. When you sweat your make up can seep into your pores, which makes it a breeding ground for blemishes. Always keep face wipes on hand before you work out so that your gym class only has you breaking out a sweat.
7. Change Your Pillowcase
Your face spends a lot of time on your pillow, so it makes sense that dirt, sweat, oil and bacteria can end up on your pillowcase. Wash or change your pillowcase at least once a week to ensure your shuteye isn’t giving you bad skin.
8. Drink Enough Water
Drinking water is important to keep your body hydrated. This is especially true if you are working out (see #6 above) and sweating. Ensure your skin looks hydrated and radiant by drinking enough water throughout the day.
