Static & Flyaways

Whether caused by a lack of humidity in the air—or by a gnarly case of hat head—static and flyaways can quickly turn an otherwise gorgeous style into an embarrassing mess. This hair problem is quite common during the winter months when the humidity takes a nosedive and our hair becomes more parched than usual. To combat hair static you’ll want to embrace a hydrating hair care routine so your locks stay moisturized and flyaway-free. Go the extra mile and invest in a high-quality hair mask and use it once a week to keep your hair nourished. Finally, if flyaways are messing with your look, rub a small amount of hair wax in your fingers and gently smooth them down.

Split Ends & Breakage

Let’s face it, nothing screams unhealthy hair quite as loudly as split ends and breakage. While regular trims are the only way to truly nip those splits in the bud—make a standing appointment every 4-6 weeks at the salon!—there are steps you can take in-between trims to keep splits at bay. First, you’ll want to keep your hair hydrated by always using a conditioner after your shampoo! Next, you’ll want to lay off the heat styling which is one of the leading causes of damage. If you must heat style always (always, always!) use a heat protectant product first to create a barrier between your delicate strand and the scalding hot temperatures of your tool. Try Fructis Sleek & Shine Flat Iron Perfector Straightening Mist to provide heat protection from your styling tools, while taming frizz to seal in smoothness and shine for a lasting, sleek finish. Finally, be gentle with your hair, especially when it’s wet. When wet, hair is at its most vulnerable to damage so in the shower don’t scrub away with the shampoo and conditioner. Post-wash, pat (don’t rub!) your hair dry, and never brush through tangles aggressively from root to tip!

Dryness & Frizz

While static hair may be a leading complaint during the colder months, when things heat up and the humidity is on a rise, frizz takes that top spot. Caused by a lack of moisture in the hair strand, frizz occurs when the hair’s cuticle opens and seeks moisture from the air around it. To combat it you need to first combat dryness. If you don’t already, following a hydrating hair care routine (sensing a pattern here?) and use weekly deep-conditioning masks to replenish moisture. Try to lay off the heat styling which can be extra drying and instead use a leave-in conditioner and allow your locks to air dry—embracing your natural texture is very in these days! Finally, for combatting frizz on the go, keep a product formulated with hydrating hair oils on hand and use as needed!

Dullness & Lack of Shine

Another all-too-common hair problem? A lack of shine. Shiny hair is the mark of healthy hair for most of us, but between environmental factors and our styling habits, we can dull that shine fast. The first step in getting it back is (you guessed it) a hydrating hair care routine. Hydrated hair is happy hair and happy hair looks healthy and luminous. Washing with steamy water in the shower can strip your hair of the natural oils it needs to look radiant, so keep that water temperature down and try to rinse on cold to help close the cuticle which helps hair to reflect light a little better. Post-shower, use a leave-in conditioner and try to allow your hair to air-dry as often as possible to avoid the drying and dulling effects of heat styling. For added shine use a hair serum such as Fructis Sleek & Shine Anti-Frizz Serum or oil spray once your locks have dried!
