Is Shade 42 right for you?
Garnier Nutrisse shade 42, "Deep Burgundy," is our deepest burgundy shade in our classic Nutrisse range, and it provides 100% gray coverage. This shade is best for anyone with natural hair between light brown and black.

If you prefer a different burgundy shade, check out our Ultra Color range: BR1, BR2, and BR3 that will reflect much more intensely. If Burgundy isn't for you and you would prefer to remain in the dark brown range, there are many shades to choose from including 40, 413, 415, 43, 434, and 452.

*For women with currently color treated hair, there are special considerations for the color result you can achieve. Because of this, we do not recommend shade 42 for hair that has been previously colored shade 30, "Darkest Brown," or darker. For more help, use our Shade Selector Tool to find the perfect shade for you!

Tolerated The Color, But Not What I Wanted.

I was so excited to dye my hair burgundy finally, but then I was pretty disappointed at the result. I used color remover to remove my old black dye from Ion, waited a day and then used this product. When I mixed the dye, it was a really deep, royal purple with no red whatsoever. The product itself was great; it was inexpensive, easy to use and didn't significantly damage my hair. When my hair dried, it was a really, dark purple that only showed up in light and still looked pretty brown. I wanted it to fade out fast, so I got it wet more frequently to try to make it bleed out (it only bled minimally, which is nice if you like your color). After a while, it turned just to a brown with deep violet highlights. I liked the purpleish tone after one or so washes, but was still angry because it wasn't what I was going for. It may work better on other hair than mine, but if you have natural medium brown hair and want a purple tone, then use this. Otherwise, look for a different shade.

Purple nightmare

I don't color my hair often, but when I did, I always used Garnier. The box for this color looks like one that I've used in the past. From what I could tell it was one shade darker than what I had used years ago and loved. I wanted to go slightly darker this time around, so I bought this one. My hair was pretty light when I used this, so I was expecting my hair to be similar to that image on the box. I understand that all results are different, but I was still hoping for a dark redish brown. (The definition of Burgundy is "a deep red color, like that of burgundy wine.") What I wound up with was something so dark it was almost black, with purple that would glow under the right lights. It didn't even hold to all of my hair, so I was left with a bad blotchy mess of black, purple, and light redish brown hair on my head. I couldn't go to work like this and so ended up paying for a salon to correct this. Of course, since it turned my light hair almost black, this meant a lightener to strip the color out. Not cheap. I had been so happy with previous colors, but this one has changed my mind about coloring all together. I think I'd rather give in to my natural brown hair with the grays coming in than take the risk of having to go through this again.

I LOVE THIS COLOR!!!

Goes on easy, not smelly AND THE RESULTING COLOR IS FANTASTIC. At first my hair is very dark, with purple highlights....under incandescent or fluorescent lights; but outside...that's where the magic happens. My hair looks so brilliant and the color is a vivid purple! My hairdresser doesn't believe I do it myself. Then as weeks go by, it lightens to a marvelous fuscia, with dark streaks! I get compliments from EVERYONE. I hope this color, #42, is never discontinued.

Love it!

I absolutely love the black cherry color! I've used it for years and have received a ton of compliments. I have natural dark brown hair and it dyes perfectly. When I first dye my hair, it almost looks black with a purple tint in the light. My hair dresser cannot believe how pretty my hair looks and feels knowing I use a store bought dye. Even after the color starts fading it turns into a beautiful red tone color.
